France's economy narrowly avoided a technical recession as Insee revised GDP growth figures downward for both the first and second quarters of 2026. The second quarter growth was adjusted from +0.2% to 0.0%, while the first quarter contraction was revised from -0.1% to -0.2%.

Economic Minister Roland Lescure attributed these revisions to the severe impact of extreme weather, including heatwaves and droughts, which significantly degraded agricultural production. He described the summer's impact as 'terrible' and 'enormous,' noting that these climatic shocks will be integrated into future budget forecasts.

While household consumption saw a slight rebound of 0.3% in the second quarter, overall purchasing power declined by approximately 0.5% to 0.6%. Additionally, inflation rose to 2.4% in August, driven largely by increasing energy costs. The agricultural sector faces significant challenges, with projections suggesting a 23% drop in national potato production due to the ongoing drought.
