France economic tensions: SMIC hike and rising labor costs
The French government is considering an early revalorization of the minimum wage (SMIC) to address social unrest and purchasing power concerns. The proposed measure involves advancing the automatic inflation indexation due in January 2027, offering an estimated increase of approximately 15 euros net per month. While intended to alleviate social tensions, labor unions such as the CFDT and CGT have rejected the proposal, demanding significantly higher increases.
Employer organizations, including MEDEF, Les Entrepreneurs, and U2P, have warned that such a move, combined with proposed changes to the 2027 Social Security financing bill, could create economic instability. They estimate these measures will impose a labor cost increase of over 11 billion euros on businesses, primarily due to the reduction of employer contribution exemptions.
Additionally, Unédic, the body managing unemployment insurance, has warned that a planned 2 billion euro levy by the State could plunge the system into a 600 million euro deficit by 2027, reversing previous progress toward debt reduction.
