France health experts outline proper intimate hygiene practices

French health guides emphasize that daily washing with a mild, non‑perfumed product is sufficient for intimate hygiene. They advise cleaning only the external genital area, drying thoroughly, wearing breathable underwear, and avoiding tight or damp clothing. Specific recommendations include limiting shower washes to once per day, steering clear of douching, scented products, and excessive scrubbing, and adjusting hygiene routines during sport and menstruation.

Separate advice on the use of washcloths notes that their popularity has waned. Historically introduced in the 17th century, a washcloth can exfoliate dead skin but may irritate if used aggressively. Dermatologist Dr Erwin Benassaia recommends gentle use with mild soap or natural shower oil and cautions against abrasive rubbing to prevent skin damage.
