France health mutuals to raise tariffs 2.5‑10% in 2026, affecting retirees

Mutual health insurers in France may increase premiums for 2026 by between 2.5% and 10%, even though a legal freeze on contributions is in place. The hikes are linked to medical inflation, higher healthcare costs, the TSA tax and the extension of the "100 % Santé" programme. Increases will vary according to age, level of coverage and geographic region, with seniors and retirees likely to see the largest rises.

Retirees face a choice between keeping their existing collective (company) contract through limited portability under the Évin law, or switching to an individual senior‑specific mutual plan. The Évin law allows continuation without medical questionnaires or waiting periods, but premiums may continue to rise and coverage may not fully match senior needs. Guidance suggests comparing guarantees, negotiating terms and considering collective versus individual options to mitigate cost impacts.
