France heatwaves cause nearly 8,000 excess deaths
A provisional report from Santé publique France indicates that nearly 8,000 excess deaths have been recorded in France due to successive heatwaves since late May 2026. The mortality toll includes three distinct episodes: a late May peak, a significant surge between mid-June and early July, and a third prolonged period from late July to August 20.
The most recent heatwave, which affected 79 departments, resulted in 817 excess deaths, a 5.2% increase in mortality for those areas. The impact was heavily concentrated among the elderly, with individuals aged 75 and older accounting for 751 of those deaths. Notably, 46% of the excess mortality during this period occurred between August 14 and 16, following the peak temperature days.
Health experts warn that the consequences of extreme heat extend beyond immediate risks like dehydration or heatstroke. Prolonged thermal stress can cause long-term damage to the cardiovascular and renal systems, exacerbate chronic illnesses, and lead to cognitive issues, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress. Finalized data for these summer episodes are expected in early 2027.
