France's summer of 2026, recorded by Météo-France as the hottest since 1900, has resulted in approximately 7,919 excess deaths due to a succession of intense heatwaves, according to provisional data from Santé publique France.

The mortality spikes occurred across several distinct periods: 95 excess deaths during a brief peak in late May, 5,764 deaths between June 17 and July 2, 1,243 deaths from July 3 to July 20, and 817 deaths during the longest heatwave episode from July 27 to August 20.

Health officials noted that the most recent heatwave primarily affected the elderly, with 751 excess deaths recorded among those aged 75 and older. Guillaume Boulanger of Santé publique France described the summer as unprecedented, noting that heatwave days significantly exceeded the typical 5% of the summer season. The final death toll is expected to rise as data collection continues through September 15.
