France faces nationwide student protests and school blockades

France is facing widespread student-led protests and school blockades that have escalated into a broader social movement. Demonstrators are demanding significant reforms to the Parcoursup university admissions system, better school facilities, and more teaching staff. Many high schools and universities across the country are currently blocked or closed.

Authorities have noted a convergence of different social movements, with the Yellow Vests and various labor unions expressing interest in joining the student mobilizations. While many actions have been peaceful, there have been reports of violent incidents and urban disorder. President Emmanuel Macron has warned that the legitimate concerns of young people are being politically exploited.

In response to the unrest, Education Minister Édouard Geffray has met with student organizations and announced the recruitment of 3,000 additional substitute teachers. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has characterized the movement as one involving urban violence. A major nationwide mobilization is planned for Saturday, October 17.
