France holds emergency meeting amid Yellow Vest protests and unrest

France is facing a significant political and social crisis as Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has convened an interministerial meeting to address ongoing unrest. The 'Yellow Vests' movement has announced plans for new demonstrations this coming Saturday.

In Paris, the aftermath of recent violence includes damaged buildings, businesses, and urban infrastructure, with an estimated 400 commercial stores affected. In response to the chaos, the government announced the creation of a support structure for impacted business owners. Meanwhile, police authorities have banned all gatherings and demonstrations in Marseille between 12:00 PM and 8:00 PM.

Political tensions are high following the resignation of Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez. Although President Emmanuel Macron declined the resignation to ensure continuity in crisis management and police operations, political figures remain divided. Socialist presidential candidate Gabriel Glixman called for order to protect democracy, while radical left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon blamed the government for the chaos. Government spokesperson Mont Brezon defended the administration, accusing Mélenchon’s party of promoting violent conflict.
