France hunting season opens in 45 departments

The hunting season is set to open in 45 French departments on Sunday, September 13, 2026, covering much of the Occitanie region and several other areas. This opening requires increased vigilance from both hunters and outdoor enthusiasts, such as hikers and cyclists, to prevent accidents. During the 2025-2026 season, the French Biodiversity Agency reported 92 hunting accidents, including four fatalities.

Willy Schraen, president of the National Federation of Hunters (FNC), issued a call for hunters to remain proud, responsible, and calm amidst rising social tensions and criticism. Addressing recent political opposition and calls to physically prevent the season's opening, Schraen urged hunters to respond to provocations with facts and legal means rather than brutality. He emphasized the importance of using scientific data and accurate field reporting to defend the legitimacy of hunting as a rural tradition.
