France implements automated blocking of illegal IPTV services
France has introduced a new technological and legal mechanism to combat illegal IPTV streaming by allowing rights holders to automatically transmit problematic IP addresses to designated technical intermediaries for immediate blocking. This system, enabled by legislation adopted in August 2026, aims to stop the financial losses affecting the entertainment and sports industries by neutralizing unauthorized broadcasts in real-time.
The Paris Judicial Court recently issued a significant ruling on October 16, granting beIN Sports the authorization to use this device to protect its broadcasting rights for the German Bundesliga. Caroline Besse Guenneteau, Secretary General of beIN Media Group, noted that the system will allow the network to act at the exact moment matches are being broadcast.
While the mechanism promises rapid execution, it faces scrutiny regarding potential collateral damage. Similar implementations in Italy and Spain have resulted in the accidental blocking of legitimate websites and platforms hosted on the same servers as illicit services. Arcom will continue to monitor the system and oversee the methods used for address collection and the measures applied to ensure compliance and minimize unjustified service interruptions.
