France implements local food security initiatives for students
Various local initiatives in France are addressing food insecurity and waste among students through social grocery stores and targeted financial aid.
At Université Toulouse Capitole, the social grocery store ‘Le Rayon 31’, supported by the Toulouse Food Bank, redistributes unsold goods from supermarkets and local producers. The project collects 3,600 tonnes of food annually, preventing approximately 75% of these items from being discarded. Volunteers use cargo bikes to collect surplus food, which is then sorted and distributed to students to promote both ecological awareness and better meal management.
In Angoulême, a project funded by a €10,000 grant from the Biocoop national foundation provides financial assistance to students to help them purchase organic food. Participants receive support in exchange for engaging in educational activities, such as meal preparation workshops and visits to local producers. While local advocates note these efforts are positive, they emphasize that such initiatives remain small-scale compared to the total number of students in need.
