France implements new bio-waste collection systems

Following 2024 mandates requiring local authorities to provide bio-waste sorting solutions, municipalities in France are deploying various collection methods to promote the circular economy and reduce household waste volumes.

In Saint-Georges-d'Orques, a new system has been introduced where households receive free perforated bio-buckets and kraft paper bags. Residents are instructed to place their organic waste—including fruit and vegetable peels, meat, fish, dairy, and coffee grounds—into these bags and deposit them in 24/7 accessible collection points. Authorities have explicitly prohibited the use of plastic bags, even those labeled as biodegradable, due to microplastic contamination risks.

Effective waste management strategies are being tailored to different living environments. Options include individual composters for homes with gardens, shared composters for schools and residential complexes, and voluntary drop-off points for dense urban areas where outdoor space is limited.
