France implements major social and energy reforms on September 1, 2026
Starting September 1, 2026, France will implement several significant social, economic, and environmental policy changes.
In the energy sector, the reference gas price is set to increase by 5.6%, reaching 172.05 euros per MWh, a rise attributed to market volatility and Middle East conflicts. This affects approximately six million households.
Major social reforms include the partial suspension of the 2023 pension reform until 2028. This adjustment affects retirement ages for specific generations, notably those born between 1964 and 1968, and introduces more favorable calculation rules for parents. Additionally, unemployment compensation for mutual terminations will be reduced for workers under 55 to a maximum of 15 months.
Healthcare regulations will introduce new limits on sick leave, capping initial prescriptions at 31 days and subsequent extensions at 62 days, unless medically justified.
In education, a ban on mobile phones in high schools will take effect. For businesses, electronic invoicing is becoming mandatory. Environmental measures include new incentives for used electric vehicles and changes to the 'Ma prime rénov’' renovation aid program, which will no longer support projects that retain gas heating.
