France implements new laws targeting IPTV piracy and Ligue 1 TV rights
French professional sports are facing significant shifts in broadcasting and legal regulations. New legislation enacted on August 6 aims to crack down on illegal IPTV services. This law targets providers and includes potential penalties for users accused of receiving counterfeit content, as well as prison sentences and fines for influencers who promote these services.
Simultaneously, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) is preparing a new tender process for Ligue 1 television rights. While the league is currently broadcast via Ligue 1+, the LFP is considering bringing rights back to the market as early as 2027 for the 2027–2032 seasons. This move, facilitated by new professional sports laws, may allow for all matches to be bundled into a single lot to drive competition and increase revenue for clubs.
