France implements new mountain regulations for camping and winter driving

France is implementing new seasonal regulations across its mountainous regions to improve safety and manage tourism.

In Chamonix, local authorities are preparing to ban wild camping by motorhomes and camper vans. Mayor François-Xavier Laffin indicated that a decree to regulate parking for these vehicles is being drafted and is expected to take effect immediately following its publication. The move follows rising complaints from residents regarding incivilities and the increasing number of itinerant tourists in the Mont Blanc valley.

Additionally, winter tire regulations will be enforced from November 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027. Under the 'Loi Montagne', drivers in specific mountainous zones must use appropriate winter equipment to prevent accidents and road blockages on snowy or icy surfaces. The mandate affects 34 departments across five mountain massifs, including the Alps, Pyrenees, Massif Central, Jura, and Vosges, though specific applicability within communes is determined by local prefects.
