France implements orchard modernization plan amid climate warnings

FranceAgriMer has launched a support program to modernize French orchards, aiming to improve competitiveness and climate change adaptation. Part of the Ministry of Agriculture’s fruit and vegetable sovereignty plan, the initiative includes a call for projects to fund orchard renovation for the 2026-2028 planting seasons. The program prioritizes the installation of young farmers, combating plant diseases, and enhancing environmental performance to ensure high-quality production and resilience against climate challenges.

Simultaneously, climate experts are warning of increasing agricultural risks. Sylvain Delzon, a research director at Inrae, has urged farmers and foresters to adapt their practices in anticipation of severe weather. Following a summer of extreme drought and massive wildfires in the Landes de Gascogne region, there are concerns that 2027 could bring even harsher conditions than 2026. Current trends indicate significant yield drops, with some crops like sunflower and corn potentially seeing decreases of 30% to 50%.
