France initiates technical dialogue with Taliban for Afghan deportations

France has initiated a “technical dialogue” with the Taliban to facilitate the deportation of Afghan nationals residing in the country illegally. According to diplomatic sources, this move is intended to ensure French public safety by accelerating the removal of individuals deemed a threat to public order, including those with criminal convictions.

While France does not officially recognize the Taliban regime and has maintained no formal diplomatic relations since the group returned to power in August 2021, this technical engagement follows a similar precedent set by Germany. France is among approximately twenty European Union member states, including Germany, Belgium, and Sweden, seeking to expedite the repatriation of Afghan citizens.

Diplomatic sources emphasized that this dialogue does not challenge France’s broader political stance on Afghanistan or its support for the Afghan people, particularly women. It is estimated that hundreds of individuals could be affected by these procedures. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not commented on whether Taliban representatives will travel to France to facilitate these discussions.
