France introduces digital driving licenses and international permit guidelines

Drivers in France can now utilize digital versions of their driving licenses via the France Identité application. To use this service, individuals must first add their new format digital identity card to the app, download a certificate of driving rights from the 'Mes Points Permis' website, and scan the QR code using the application. This digital format is compatible with smartphones running at least Android 11 or iOS 16, allowing authorities to verify authenticity via NFC technology.

Regarding international travel, the international driving permit serves as a multilingual translation of a French license and must always be presented alongside the original national license. While not always strictly required for short tourist stays, it is highly recommended in several regions, including parts of Asia, the Middle East, and certain U.S. states. Obtaining this permit is a free online process, though travelers should account for processing times to avoid issues with vehicle rental companies.

Looking ahead, the traditional pink paper driving licenses will eventually be phased out. By 2033, authorities will only accept the newer credit-card-sized format.
