France introduces pink provisional license plates to combat fraud

France has implemented a new system for provisional vehicle license plates, featuring bright pink backgrounds with black lettering. Effective January 1, 2026, all newly issued provisional plates must use this color scheme, following a decree published on November 21, 2025.

The measure, introduced by the French Ministry of the Interior, aims to combat rising fraud within the registration system. The pink plates are intended to make vehicles with temporary registration more easily identifiable and controllable by authorities.

The new regulations affect both WW plates, used by private individuals for new or imported vehicles awaiting final registration, and W plates, used by car dealers and workshops for test drives and vehicle transfers. With over 400,000 such registrations issued annually in France, the ministry seeks to tighten oversight. Falsifying these license plates is a serious offense, punishable by fines of up to 30,000 euros or up to seven years in prison.
