France introduces new subsidies for used electric vehicles

France is introducing new financial incentives to accelerate the transition to electric mobility, specifically targeting the used vehicle market. Starting September 1, 2026, a new subsidy funded by Energy Savings Certificates (CEE) will be available for the purchase or long-term lease of used electric cars.

For the general public, the aid is estimated at approximately 337 euros. However, targeted support is available for specific sectors: home care professionals can receive between 2,000 and 2,360 euros, and taxi drivers may access up to 5,500 euros if the vehicle and its battery are manufactured within Europe.

To qualify, vehicles must be 100% electric (hybrids are excluded), first registered in France between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2023, and purchased through an automotive professional. A critical requirement is battery health, which must maintain at least 80% of its original capacity or residual autonomy.

This initiative follows a broader trend in Europe, where battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations have grown significantly. In 2025, BEVs accounted for 17.3% of all new car registrations in the EU, with Germany, the UK, and France leading in total volume.
