France launches national observatory to combat medical disinformation
The French Ministry of Health has officially launched a national observatory to counter medical disinformation, a move spearheaded by Health Minister Stéphanie Rist. The initiative includes a dedicated TikTok account named ‘Le CheckUp,’ featuring short videos where specialists such as infectiologists and gynecologists debunk false health claims.
The program aims to reach younger audiences on social media platforms where misinformation regarding vaccination, nutrition, and cancer treatments has become widespread. Regional health agencies will report ‘weak signals’ of misinformation identified online or in the field, allowing experts to draft and publish scientific corrections on TikTok and the Santé.fr website.
Data highlights the urgency of the issue: nearly 40% of French citizens report encountering medical lies monthly, and 18% encounter them weekly. The clinical consequences are significant, with 32% of respondents reporting interruptions in treatment and 34% reporting delays in medical consultations due to online misinformation. The first campaign focuses on mammography screening to address false claims regarding radiological examinations and chemotherapy.
