France Leads EU EV Charging Targets while Malta Misses 60‑km Goal

A Transport & Environment report shows that 79 % of the EU road network met the fast‑charging requirement of a charger every 60 km by June 2026, and the EU now hosts over 1.1 million public charging points. Germany, France, the Netherlands and Belgium are the leading countries.

France is a clear outlier in the positive direction, delivering 140 % of the power capacity required under the AFIR regulation and reaching 87 % of the geographic coverage expected for 2030. It has already hit 99 % of the 2025 network‑density target and 100 % of the secondary 2027 target. However, installation rates have slowed, with only 12 162 new chargers added in the first half of 2026 versus 14 865 in the same period a year earlier, challenging the ambition to reach 400 000 points by 2030.

In contrast, Malta is the only EU member state that does not meet the 60‑km spacing rule, falling short of the EU goal despite a growing number of electric vehicles on the island.
