France Leads EU in Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure

France’s public electric‑vehicle charging network has surpassed the targets set by the European Union’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation. By the end of the first quarter of 2026, the total capacity of French public chargers was about 40 % above the EU‑mandated thresholds. The country reached roughly 140 % of the 2025 power‑availability goal of 1.3 kW per electric car on motorways and already fulfils 87 % of the 2030 requirement for a fast‑charging point every 60 km.

The high‑coverage French network, with 99 % compliance on primary routes and strong performance on secondary roads, is part of a broader European expansion that saw public charging points rise from 220 000 in 2020 to 1.1 million in 2025, with a target of 2.1 million by 2030. Operators are continuing to expand fast‑charging stations along highways and major corridors, reinforcing France’s position as one of the continent’s most advanced EV‑charging markets.
