France local tax updates: 2026 increases and payment options

Property owners in France face upcoming changes and options regarding local taxes. For 2026, local taxes are expected to increase by a minimum of 0.8%, a deceleration compared to previous years such as 2024 (3.9%) and 2023 (7.1%). These increases are driven by the annual revaluation of cadastral rental values based on inflation, as well as potential rate hikes by municipalities to cover rising costs and service requirements.

To assist homeowners facing exceptional financial difficulties—such as job loss, accidents, or bereavement—the tax administration may allow for installment payments. These requests are not automatic and are evaluated on a case-by-case basis through the official impots.gouv.fr portal. The administration considers the taxpayer's history, noting that frequent requests for extensions or repeated payment delays may lead to denials, as the system is intended for temporary, unforeseen hardships.
