France braces for new protests as Macron meets student groups

President Emmanuel Macron met with representatives from major high school student organizations at the Élysée Palace to discuss their demands for education reform. The students, seeking better school funding, more teachers, and the abolition of the Parcoursup higher education access system, expressed skepticism regarding the President's proposals. Student leaders stated that the offered reforms were insufficient and signaled intentions to continue mobilizations.

In response to recent violence and looting, the French government has implemented several security measures. Curfews remain in effect in Paris, Lyon, and Marseille, and protests have been banned in several cities, including Nice. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is scheduled to meet with student, teacher, and union representatives on Monday, October 26, to discuss concrete measures.

Security forces are being reinforced for upcoming demonstrations, with a planned 20 percent increase in law enforcement presence. Following intelligence failures during previous unrest, where participation reached between 550,000 and 800,000 people, the government is deploying elite units including RAID, GIGN, and the BRI. Additionally, the Louvre museum is scheduled to close this Saturday in Paris.
