France maintains position as world's second-largest arms exporter

France has maintained its position as the world’s second-largest arms exporter, according to a report from the Ministry of the Armed Forces. In 2025, defense export orders reached 21.2 billion euros, marking the third-highest performance in the nation's history.

The aerospace sector remains the primary driver, accounting for approximately 40% of orders, largely due to the success of the Rafale fighter jet. India has emerged as France’s largest defense customer for 2025, with orders totaling approximately 6.9 billion euros, including a significant contract for 26 Rafale Marine jets.

Other notable international sales include Scorpène Evolved submarines to Indonesia, a frigate to Greece, Caracal helicopters to Morocco, and Caesar artillery to Slovenia and Croatia. The naval sector represents 19% of orders, while missiles account for 18%.

Despite this domestic success, French industry faces challenges within Europe. While European military spending has surged, American suppliers currently capture 48% of European defense imports, compared to France’s 6.2% share. This highlights a persistent preference for U.S. equipment among many EU member states.
