France maintains status as top global tourist destination

France continues to hold its position as the world's leading tourist destination, welcoming over 89 million foreign visitors in 2025 according to INSEE data. The country's appeal is driven by a diverse range of historical monuments, such as the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre, as well as regional attractions in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, Brittany, and the Loire Valley.

In addition to traditional sightseeing, river tourism is emerging as a significant trend for travelers seeking authenticity and sustainable travel options. France possesses Europe's largest navigable waterway network, spanning over 8,500 kilometers of rivers and canals, including the UNESCO-listed Canal du Midi.

The public establishment Voies Navigables de France (VNF) manages this network and promotes river travel as a tool for regional development and job creation. Support measures, such as reduced tolls and fees, have been implemented to bolster the sector, which offers various experiences ranging from traditional excursion boats to high-end hotel barges.
