France mandates solar panels on parking lots to cut electricity bills

The measure is expected to add about 11 GW of electricity to the French grid – enough to power roughly 12 million homes – and imposes fines of up to €40,000 for non‑compliance.
Industry experts such as Rob Stait of Alight note that solar canopies also provide covered parking, lower vehicle interior temperatures during hot summers, and integrate seamlessly with electric‑vehicle charging stations, further supporting the continent’s clean‑energy transition.
