France commemorates Father Jacques Hamel on 10‑year anniversary
On 26 July 2016 Father Jacques Hamel, an 85‑year‑old parish priest in Saint‑Étienne‑du‑Rouvray, was slain while celebrating Mass. Two 19‑year‑old assailants, Adel Kermiche and Abdel‑Malik Petitjean, claimed allegiance to the Islamic State and were shot dead by police at the scene.
A decade later, French authorities marked the tenth anniversary with a ceremony in the same church. President Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, former President François Hollande and other officials attended. A Mass was celebrated, presided over by Cardinal Jean‑Marc Aveline, and a commemorative plaque was unveiled on the church’s forecourt. The event highlighted Hamel’s legacy of inter‑religious dialogue and the nation’s “fraternity” message.
The Vatican’s beatification process for Hamel, opened in 2017, remains pending. In 2022 French courts convicted three accomplices of terrorist conspiracy and sentenced a fourth defendant, linked to the attack, to life imprisonment.
