France medical workforce projected to grow up to 75% by 2060

Projections from the French Ministry of Health's statistical directorate, Drees, suggest that France could see a significant increase in its medical workforce by 2060. Under a scenario where approximately 12,200 students enter their second year of medical school annually and 2,500 non-EU trained doctors are integrated into the system each year, the number of active doctors and interns under age 70 could rise from the current 261,800 to 464,200 by 2060.

Drees notes that these figures are based on various scenarios rather than fixed predictions. For instance, if the number of second-year medical students were to increase to 15,200 by 2031, the workforce could potentially reach 527,700 by 2060. Conversely, if no non-EU doctors were integrated, the 2060 workforce would likely be around 400,800. The agency emphasized that the medical demographics for 2040 are largely determined by the current number of practicing physicians and students due to the long duration of medical studies.
