France micro-enterprise registration and regulations

The micro-enterprise regime in France, often colloquially referred to as ‘auto-entrepreneur’, is a simplified tax and social security framework for individual entrepreneurs. Since January 1, 2016, the terms ‘auto-entrepreneur’ and ‘micro-entrepreneur’ have referred to the same legal and fiscal system, though ‘micro-entrepreneur’ is the official terminology used in administrative procedures.

Registration is conducted online and free of charge through the INPI single window. Once the application is processed, Insee assigns a Siren and Siret number to the business. The regime is available to individuals, including those maintaining salaried employment, but excludes companies and property traders.

For 2026, turnover thresholds are set at €203,100 for the sale of goods and €83,600 for service-based and liberal activities. Exceeding these limits only results in the loss of the regime if the threshold is surpassed for two consecutive years. Required documentation for registration includes valid identification, a declaration of non-conviction, proof of address, and, where applicable, professional qualifications or diplomas.
