France moves forward with THUNDART long‑range missile system by MBDA and Safran

MBDA and Safran Electronics & Defense have entered the final phase of negotiations with the French Defence Procurement Agency (DGA) to conclude a contract for the THUNDART system, the successor to the Lance‑Roquettes Unitaire (LRU). THUNDART will give the French Army a precision strike capability of up to 150 km, designed for high‑intensity conflict and operable in hostile environments, with service entry targeted for 2030.

The system is wholly French‑designed and produced, integrates with the Army’s ATLAS fire‑control system and can be fitted to various launch platforms. MBDA, Safran and their partner Roxel are planning an equal‑share joint venture to accelerate development, increase range and adapt the system to future operational needs. Industrial partners such as Scania France, CMAR and Essone will contribute to the launcher and munition pod, supporting potential exports to allied nations while retaining full export‑control autonomy.
