France moves to tighten tax rules for Airbnb short‑term rentals

The French government has introduced a draft law aimed at curbing tax avoidance in short‑term rentals managed through platforms such as Airbnb. The proposal seeks to impose stricter registration and reporting requirements, increase penalties for non‑compliance, and ensure that rental income is fully taxed. By doing so, authorities hope to level the fiscal playing field between professional hoteliers and private hosts, protect the supply of long‑term housing, and boost local municipal revenues. The bill follows earlier measures like the 2014 ALUR law and targets high‑pressure markets, including Paris and cities such as Colmar. Public consultations and parliamentary debate are planned before the legislation is adopted.
