France: Navigating AAH and unemployment benefit transitions

In France, the interaction between the Disabled Adult Allowance (AAH) and unemployment benefits creates complex financial transitions for recipients. When an individual loses employment, the ARE (unemployment insurance) acts as a supplement to income, causing the CAF to adjust the AAH amount downward to compensate for the unemployment payments.

Once ARE benefits are exhausted, the transition to ASS (social solidarity allowance) or a return to work involves different regulatory rules. Because the AAH at full rate often exceeds the resource ceiling for the ASS, combining the two is practically difficult for most recipients.
