France officials admit intelligence failure following massive protests
French government officials, including President Emmanuel Macron and Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, have acknowledged a significant intelligence failure following widespread protests against the high cost of living on October 17.
Intelligence services had predicted approximately 150,000 protesters in the provinces and 80,000 in Paris. However, official figures reported 550,000 participants nationwide, with 110,000 in the capital. The unexpected scale of the mobilization led to chaos, vandalism, and looting in cities such as Paris, Lyon, Marseille, and Limoges, which security forces struggled to contain.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin noted that while French intelligence is effective against Islamist terrorism and organized crime, it appears unable to properly address movements from the far-left. This incident follows previous instances, such as the 2018 'yellow vest' movement and the June 2023 civil unrest, where authorities underestimated the scale of mass mobilizations.
