France opposes Viktor Orbán for UN Secretary-General role

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot has expressed firm opposition to the potential appointment of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán as the next UN Secretary-General. Speaking in the Senate, Barrot stated that the position should not serve as a consolation prize for a leader rejected by their own people. He emphasized that the UN Secretary-General must strengthen the organization's authority and credibility rather than undermining it.

The opposition comes amid reports that the United States, in cooperation with Russia and China, has considered Orbán's name for the post. France, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, holds veto power that could block such a nomination.

While Barrot did not explicitly announce a formal veto, he argued that the UN requires leadership capable of addressing global challenges like war, climate change, and pandemics through international cooperation. Additionally, the principle of geographic rotation suggests the successor to António Guterres is likely to come from outside Europe, which may further impact Orbán's prospects.
