France pension system faces demographic decline and deficit

A technical note from the French Directorate General of the Treasury (DG Trésor) highlights significant demographic and financial challenges facing the French pension system. The report indicates that while there are currently 2.5 contributors for every retiree, this ratio is projected to drop to 1.6 by 2070.

The document forecasts a deficit of €5.1 billion as early as 2025. It notes that French workers exit the labor market earlier than the OECD average, with men retiring at an average age of 61.9 and women at 62.4, compared to 64.7 and 63.6 respectively in OECD countries. While the French system maintains a replacement rate comparable to its neighbors, the combination of early retirement and demographic shifts creates a structural imbalance that will likely become a central issue in upcoming political debates.
