France petition for mandatory Nutri-Score labeling exceeds 100,000 signatures
A petition calling for the mandatory display of the Nutri-Score on food packaging in France has surpassed 100,000 signatures. This milestone allows the petition to be published on the French National Assembly website.
Proponents of the measure, including nutritionist Serge Hercberg, aim to promote public health by making nutritional information more accessible. While deputies previously voted for an amendment to mandate the label during budget discussions, the Senate opposed it, and a subsequent vote in the National Assembly narrowly rejected the requirement in December.
The movement has gained support from the National Academy of Medicine, 45 scientific societies, and 33 citizen associations. To trigger a formal debate within the National Assembly, the petition must reach at least 500,000 signatures from at least 30 different departments or overseas territories.
