France poses potential challenge to Western Balkan EU accession

Journalist Tim Judah has raised concerns regarding France's potential influence on the European Union accession process for Western Balkan nations. He noted that many in the region may not fully grasp the extent to which France could pose a challenge to their membership ambitions.

Montenegro is currently positioned as a strong candidate for future EU membership. With a population of approximately 630,000, the country is viewed as having a minimal financial impact on the EU, with agricultural exports too small to disrupt European farmers and a low risk of significant labor migration. While the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine provided renewed momentum for EU enlargement, political stances from member states, particularly France, remain a critical factor for candidate countries.
