France postpones Marc Bloch reinterment and G7 agenda for US Trump

In the run‑up to the G7 summit in France, officials shifted the meeting from June 14 to June 16 to avoid clashing with U.S. President Donald Trump’s 80th birthday celebrations and a White House cage‑match event. President Emmanuel Macron also crafted a summit programme that he said was designed to "appeal to the sort of things Trump wants," according to a Reuters analyst.

At the same time, French authorities delayed the ceremonial transfer of the remains of French Resistance hero and historian Marc Bloch to the Panthéon. The reinterment, originally set for June 16 to coincide with the anniversary of his 1944 murder by the Gestapo, was moved a week later. Critics argued the rescheduling showed France prioritising the preferences of Washington over a nationally significant commemoration.

The combined adjustments have been described as evidence of a “political dependence” on the United States, sparking debate over French sovereignty and the balance of interests in the bilateral relationship.
