France potato harvest threatened by extreme heat and drought
French potato producers are facing a historic crisis as extreme heat and severe drought threaten to slash the national harvest by approximately 23% compared to the previous year. The Union Nationale des Producteurs de Pommes de Terre (UNPT) reports that the average yield for consumption potatoes could drop to 37.4 tonnes per hectare, down from 43.5 tonnes in 2025. This would represent the lowest yield recorded in over three decades, surpassing the impact of the historic 2022 drought.
The economic consequences are estimated to be at least 400 million euros. Producers are calling for immediate and exceptional government support to mitigate these losses and are requesting that existing commercial contracts be adjusted to reflect the actual harvest volumes.
This climate shock follows a period where production areas had already been reduced by 10% in France due to previous overproduction. Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard has previously mentioned a global support plan to assist farmers facing repeated heatwaves, including measures for cash flow and social contributions.
