France prepares for August 12 2026 partial solar eclipse with safety and photography tips

On Wednesday, 12 August 2026, a partial solar eclipse will sweep across the French sky, with the Moon covering up to 99 % of the Sun in western coastal areas such as Biarritz and around 90 % in places like Strasbourg. The gradual darkening will offer a striking visual display, but it also poses serious risks to eyes and camera equipment.

Health authorities and astronomy experts stress the need for ISO 12312‑2 certified eclipse‑viewing glasses or CE‑marked filters for any optical device. Looking at the Sun without proper protection can cause corneal inflammation or retinal damage within seconds. Photographers are advised to attach a suitable solar filter to their smartphone camera, switch to manual or “pro” mode, set the lowest ISO, increase shutter speed, lock focus and exposure, and use a stable mount to avoid blur. Recording the event through an unfiltered screen or lens does not protect the eyes and can also damage the sensor.
