France: President Macron condemns widespread riots and unrest

French President Emmanuel Macron has called for restraint following widespread protests and riots across the country. The unrest, driven by rising living costs and declining public services, has escalated into significant violence in several cities.

President Macron condemned the “unbridled” violence, stating that the destructive actions of certain groups cannot be justified or forgiven. While acknowledging the legitimate grievances of peaceful protesters, he emphasized that the government will take a “zero tolerance” approach toward agitators and those engaging in looting and vandalism.

Reports indicate severe damage, including the burning of the Limoges city hall and attacks on luxury stores and supermarkets. The unrest has resulted in approximately 2,400 arrests and nearly 1,000 police officers injured. One protester reportedly died in Paris following a cardiac arrest during the demonstrations. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed the scale of the law enforcement response as authorities struggle to contain the disorder.
