France property tax: deadlines and overvaluation risks

Property owners in France are receiving their 2026 property tax notices, prompting reminders regarding payment deadlines and potential overvaluations. For paper payments, such as checks or cash at partner tobacco shops, the deadline is set for mid-October. However, those paying online via the official tax website or application benefit from a five-day extension.

There are concerns regarding the accuracy of these assessments. A study by the platform Orka.tax found that 87% of 1,351 examined notices contained overvaluations, with an average overpayment of 260 euros. To verify accuracy, owners are advised to request their cadastral evaluation sheet (form 6675) from the tax administration to review details such as calculated surface area, housing category, and comfort coefficients.

Disputes regarding the 2026 property tax can be filed until December 31, 2027. It is important to note that contesting an assessment does not exempt owners from the obligation to pay the tax within the original deadlines; failure to do so may result in penalties. If an error is confirmed, the administration will issue a refund.
