France proposes limits on aesthetic medicine for doctors

The French government is preparing a decree to cap aesthetic medical activities at 30% of working time for private practitioners. The measure aims to address healthcare shortages by ensuring doctors dedicate the majority of their time to therapeutic specialties.

Under the proposed regulations, physicians wishing to engage in aesthetic medicine—a highly lucrative field not covered by national health insurance—must first complete five years of full-time practice in their original specialty. Additionally, candidates will be required to complete specific theoretical and practical training.

Data from the UME-SML union indicates that among 125,000 private doctors in France, between 2,800 and 5,000 currently perform aesthetic procedures. This group includes approximately 1,500 general practitioners, 500 of whom focus exclusively on aesthetic work, as well as plastic surgeons and dermatologists.
