France proposes rebranding EHPAD facilities as Maisons France Autonomie

The French government has announced a plan to transform EHPAD nursing homes into ‘Maisons France Autonomie’ by 2027. Introduced by Camille Galliard-Minier, the Minister Delegate for Autonomy and Disabled Persons, the reform aims to modernize the image of these facilities and diversify medico-social offerings, including ‘out-of-walls’ solutions and improved care pathways.

However, the elderly care sector has expressed significant skepticism. The national union Synerpa noted that while changing terminology may improve clarity for citizens, it cannot substitute for actual policy. The federation FNAQPA warned that the move risks becoming a mere administrative labeling exercise without addressing urgent structural needs or providing the necessary funding for deep transformation.

In a localized response to senior isolation, a private initiative in Nercillac, known as ‘Maison de la Liberté,’ offers an alternative model. Managed by Roselyne and Régis Teillet, the shared home provides a middle ground for autonomous seniors who wish to avoid medicalized institutions while seeking social connection and shared living spaces to combat loneliness.
