France: Protests and censorship concerns drive surge in Bitchat usage

Massive protests in France against the rising cost of living have led to a surge in the popularity of Bitchat, a messaging application developed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey. The app has become one of the most downloaded social networking programs on the App Store in France and has entered the top ten most downloaded free apps overall.

Bitchat utilizes Bluetooth mesh networking, allowing users to exchange messages without an internet connection, mobile network, or phone number. In this system, devices act as relays, passing messages from one phone to another to extend communication range, theoretically up to 300 meters.

The increased interest follows widespread demonstrations and reports of potential government censorship. Reports indicate that Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu sent a confidential letter to major GSM operators—Orange, SFR, Free, and Bouygues Telecom—requesting readiness to temporarily restrict access to platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and X (formerly Twitter) during periods of violence. However, telecom representatives reportedly expressed hesitation regarding the technical capacity and necessity of such disruptions.
