France protests spark political divide in European Parliament
Political tensions flared in the European Parliament regarding ongoing violent protests in France. Right-wing MEP Francois-Xavier Bellamy accused the left-wing movement La France Insoumise (LFI) of inciting violence and legitimizing it, citing rhetoric from LFI officials.
In response to widespread unrest that began in the northern suburbs of Paris over educational facilities and inequality, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has requested that local authorities implement partial curfews. The protests have resulted in several thousand arrests and hundreds of injured police officers, alongside property damage and looting.
Socialist MEP Christophe Clergeau condemned the violence but criticized the right-wing members for failing to address injuries to protesters and for potentially escalating tensions through their rhetoric.
