France proximity hospitals face debate over rural care and costs

A study by the Direction de la recherche, des études, de l’évaluation et des statistiques (Drees) highlights the critical role of proximity hospitals (HPR) in France, particularly within rural areas. These facilities serve as the first level of hospital care, often catering to elderly populations and providing medium-to-long-term stays. Most HPRs are public sector institutions and frequently include nursing homes (Ehpad).

While these hospitals are essential for territorial anchoring in isolated regions, they face ongoing debate regarding their sustainability. Some officials, including deputy Philippe Juvin, have raised concerns about the quality of care in smaller facilities with low activity levels, suggesting that grouping resources might be necessary to ensure medical standards. Conversely, the Drees data underscores the high demand for these structures in rural zones where they often represent a significant portion of the local healthcare offering.
