France public deficit reaches 5.1% of GDP in 2025

Official statistics from Insee indicate that France's public deficit reached 5.1% of GDP in 2025, amounting to approximately 152.5 billion euros. The Ministry of Economy and Finance aims to reduce this ratio to 5% in 2026, with a long-term goal of returning below 3% by 2029. This trajectory occurs while France remains under the European Union's excessive deficit procedure.

Public debt was recorded at 115.6% of GDP at the end of 2025. Projections for 2026 suggest debt could exceed 3,500 billion euros, potentially approaching 118% of GDP if no further fiscal measures are implemented. The government intends to stabilize debt at these levels.

In response to these fiscal tensions, presidential candidate David Lisnard has criticized the continuous degradation of public accounts. He argued that current efforts are insufficient and warned that the current trajectory negatively impacts future generations. Lisnard also expressed opposition to the SRU law regarding social housing quotas.
